What is Zero Waste and how to reduce your waste

We hear more and more about Zero Waste, but what is it?

Zero waste is simply a 'movement' for the reduction of waste production, anyone can be part of it, its activists are guys, families, very normal people, who have decided to stop producing waste. If we want to be more precise, we can describe Zero Waste as a set of principles that encourages the definition of a new resource cycle so that all products are recycled or reused.

Currently, only 9% of the plastic we discard is recycled. For this reason, those who live a Zero Waste life are committed to producing as little non-recyclable waste as possible.

To those who have never tried to live more sustainably, the Zero Waste route may seem like a road of deprivation, but that's not the case, simply instead of going to the supermarket and buying toothpaste, you can do it at home with water, baking soda, aloe, mint and coconut oil, or you can reuse glass jars once they are empty, you can take reusable stainless steel cups and bamboo straws with you. Bring with you reusable bags for shopping, fruit and vegetables, is a great solution to reduce your waste. In several states, there are already bulk stores selling everything from pasta, legumes, soaps, etc..

Being more careful about waste and consumption isn't a whim or even worse a fad, because there are many reasons to want to reduce your waste. The main one is certainly related to attention to the environment. Starting from everyday life to reduce our environmental impact is a good way to live in health and to leave a better world to the next generations.

Another reason is the attention to the wallet, in fact, reducing disposable items, choosing reusable ones, will help us to have over time a considerable saving of money.

Even the purchase of bulk products is convenient, since you don't pay for the wrapping and packaging of the product.

Consequently, by reducing the consumption of packaged and processed food, we will reduce plastic wrappers (and in general waste) for the benefit of the environment and the consumption of food preservatives and industrial products that are harmful to our health.

Let's get used to cooking healthy food, prepare the lunch box to take to the office and refuse the snack from the distributor, we will reduce the amount of sugar and fat in the diet.

Buying from local stores, we will do our part, stimulating the circular economy as bulk stores often source their products from local producers, as opposed to Large Distribution, who use cheap and poor quality products.

Choose to change in a conscious way, become part of a green community also virtual, can be of great help to start but also to continue the path to Zero Waste living.
